Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has embarked on an ambitious journey with the commencement of Phase II of the Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project. This significant phase is set to elevate the coverage of the emirate’s main road network from the current 60% to a full 100% by 2026.

As a result, the length of the road network integrated into the ITS will see a substantial increase, extending from 480 kilometers to an impressive 710 kilometers. This expansion is a testament to Dubai’s commitment to enhancing road safety, reducing congestion, and ensuring a smoother, more efficient travel experience for all its residents and visitors. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project!

Enhancing Connectivity: A Milestone in Traffic Management

In the initial phase of the project, 116 new traffic surveillance cameras were installed, increasing the total number to 311. Additionally, 100 incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices were added, bringing their total to 227. This phase also saw the installation of 112 Variable Message Signs (VMS) to provide real-time road condition updates. Moreover, 115 travel time and speed measurement devices were fitted. To further enhance the system, 17 weather sensor stations were set up. The project included the construction of 660 kilometers of electric power lines and the installation of a fiber optic network stretching 820 kilometers.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) oversees traffic management in the emirate through the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center in Al Barsha. This center is one of the largest and most advanced traffic control facilities in the world. It utilizes cutting-edge technologies and traffic management systems to accommodate Dubai’s growth, positioning the city among the global leaders in intelligent traffic systems, alongside Singapore and Seoul.

Enhancing Dubai’s Roads: The Future of Intelligent Transport Systems

Dubai is on the fast track to becoming a global leader in smart transport solutions. The city’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is steering the future with cutting-edge technologies to manage and enhance its road networks. Central to this initiative is the advanced traffic control system known as “iTraffic,” powered by AI and big data analytics to support efficient decision-making.

The Improvement and Expansion Project

RTA’s ambitious Improvement and Expansion Project aims to integrate the latest in intelligent technologies and software. This includes the adoption of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and expanding the use of advanced Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). A benchmarking study with leading global cities in transport innovation will guide this transformation.

Remarkable Achievements

The project has already yielded impressive results:

  • Incident Monitoring: Enhanced by 63%
  • Response Times: Reduced by 20% through the use of Variable Message Signs (VMS)
  • These achievements were made possible through the integration of VMS, improved linkage with the Enterprise Command and Control Centre, and collaboration with the Dubai Police General HQ.

A Vision for the Future

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlights the project’s broader impact:

“This expansion will enhance road network management and traffic flow through better monitoring, faster response times to incidents, and providing instant information to the public about the condition of the road network via new Variable Message Signs (VMS) and smart applications to help distribute traffic effectively.

The project enhances personal mobility by integrating modern and advanced technologies and self-driving transport solutions thanks to providing a comprehensive ITS infrastructure designed to meet current and future needs.”

Intelligent Road Network Management

The expansion of ITS will revolutionize how Dubai manages its road networks. Improved monitoring and quicker responses to incidents mean a smoother and safer driving experience for everyone. VMS and smart applications will keep the public informed in real-time, helping to alleviate congestion and distribute traffic more efficiently.

Embracing Future Technologies

This project is more than just a technological upgrade; it’s a leap toward a smarter, more connected city. By integrating modern technologies and self-driving transport solutions, Dubai is laying the groundwork for a future where personal mobility is seamless and efficient.

With these advancements, Dubai is not just keeping pace with global trends but setting new standards in intelligent transport systems. The RTA’s commitment to innovation ensures that the city’s road network will continue to meet the needs of its residents and visitors for years to come.
