What are the trucial states?
Through a number of treaties, the sheikhdoms that made up the Trucial States permanently allied with the British. The region was also referred to as the pirate coast, the Trucial coast, the Trucial Sheikhdoms, the Trucial States of the Coast of Oman, and Trucial Oman. The Trucial States are named as such because the treaties produced a truce. The agreements paved the way for the establishment of the British Protectorate in 1820.
The seven modern-day emirates of the United Arab Emirates – Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah – were the Trucial sheikhdoms.
Why was the UAE called the Trucial States?
The sheikhdoms of the UAE collectively referred to as “the Trucial States” at the time, came together to sign a treaty with Great Britain in 1892. In accordance with this treaty, agreed to defend the coastline from any maritime aggression and assist in thwarting any land-based assault.
Following the defeat of the Qawasims, the British made a number of agreements with the sheikhs of the various emirates between 1820 and 1853. These agreements required the sheikhs to maintain maritime tranquilly, refrain from constructing large ships, and erect fortifications along the coast. However, there was a lot of ongoing maritime conflict between Arab tribes.
Due to these agreements, the region came to be known as the “Trucial States” or “Trucial Coast.”
What is Trucial States Council?
On the southern Persian Gulf coast, there were seven sheikhdoms known as the Trucial States: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Ras al-Khaima, Sharjah, Fujairah, and Umm al-Quwain. These sheikhdoms, which were under British protection, dealt with a range of problems both at home and abroad.
Logistics conflicts with Britain and India (which was governed by the British) dominated the first half of the 20th century and occasionally resulted in unneeded food shortages and port occupation.
The Trucial States discovered oil in 1931, but a contract the sheikhs had signed in 1922 stated that the states could not grant any oil concessions to any company without the British government’s approval.
Each sheikhdom had to effectively govern and provide for its people in addition to dealing with British rule. The Trucial States Council was established in 1952 to promote collaboration among the Sheikhdoms, and this is where the committee will start.
What was the UAE called before the Trucial States?
The history of the region dates back to 6000 B.C. At the time, there was no UAE federation. Arabian Peninsula was the name given to the region in question as well as its surroundings.
Bedouin communities that relied on plant gathering and fishing existed during this time. The development of pottery during this time period can be seen in Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi. The evidence dates back to the Paleolithic Age’s Ubaid period, which began in the sixth millennium B.C.
