About Thalassemia Centre
Thalassemia Centre consists of a day care unit, outpatient clinics in addition to a well-established social and outreach services:
Day Care Unit with 28 beds for patients who require blood transfusion.
Outpatient Clinics utilized for effective screening, counseling and continuous medical care for patients with Thalassemia and other Hemoglobinopathies.
Patients are referred to our Centre from other DHA departments; mainly from the PHC
Once given the referral patient can book an appointment by calling the Centre’s reception on 04-2193392 during working hours 7:30am-2:30pm.
We accept patients with valid DHA health cards.
The Centre is a day care Centre (this means no over-night stays) and it is open from 7:30am-9:30 pm Sunday –Thursday.
What is the main signs of Thalassemia patients?
Children born with Thalassemia major usually develop symptom of severe anemia within the first year of life. Symptoms may appear as they grow:
- Paleness of the skin
- Poor Appetite
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Bone deformity
- Failure to drive
- Delayed puberty

What treatment is available for Thalassemia?
- Regular blood transfusion every 3 to 4 weeks.
- Chelation therapy to reduce iron overload Bone marrow transplantation from fully matched compatible donor.
