When it comes to registering your new car, one thing you realize, it has just got a little costlier, following the implementation of a new unified federal decree. Though the fees for nearly all vehicle-related services have doubled in price, the residents in Abu Dhabi and Dubai welcomed the hike meantto regulate traffic services and safety.

Vehicle license is different from driving license and you need to register your vehicle with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), UAE. This has to be renewed every year and only a 30-day grace period is given to drivers to renew their registration once it expires. Sometimes, people caught driving a car with an expired registration are either fined a hefty amount of Dh500 or cars were impounded for seven days and some even lost their licenses.

Documents required to register a new car in Dubai

If you are buying a new car in Dubai from the dealer, registration becomes seamless as they take care of the first year’s process. However, the next year, the onus lies on you.  If you plan to do it yourself for the first year, you will find the process less complicated than you thought.

  • Car insurance certificate which is valid for a minimum of 12 months must be from an insurance service provider in the country, listed on the RTA website.
  • Previous registration card (in case of renewal)
  • Passport or Emirates ID
  • Letter from the bank if your car is financed
  • Driving license
  • Car test certificate (not required for new cars)
  • Authorization letter from the showroom

Procedure for New Car Registration in Dubai 

  • Visit RTA center and submit the above mentioned documents along with the certificate of ownership and authorization letter
  • The process shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes.
  • Collect the registration card, license plates and stickers from the designated counter.
  • Apart from the RTA website, you can also use their smart application, and kiosks to make the registration process quicker and easier.

Lower car prices, cheaper fuel rates and easy availability of loans make purchase of cars feasible.
