MEA’s Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has opened applications for its Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) for the academic year 2019-20. The SPDC Scheme aims to assist children of Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and PIO card holders pursue under-graduate courses (except medical courses) in Indian Institutions and Universities. The programme will cover up to 75 per cent of the education costs in select universities. This accounts for $4000 (₹277,002) worth of scholarship every year. Since its inception, the Indian government has awarded over 800 scholarships to students. Also in a bid to promote India internationally, PM Modi has raised the scholarship amount in 2019.
Annual Scholarship
Applications are accepted through spdcindia.gov.in. The programme, which was introduced in 2006-07, provides annual scholarships for payment of tuition fee, admission fee and post-admission services for Under Graduate courses in Engineering, Technology, Humanities, Liberal Arts, Commerce, Management, Journalism, Hotel Management, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and a few other courses. It is applicable to students who have already secured admission in Indian Institutions. Admission is permitted only in Central Universities, NAAC “A” Grade Institutions, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), School of Planning & Architecture (SPAs), and Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) as covered under Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme.

Eligibility
According to the Indian Consulate, NRI candidates would be eligible for the grant of the scholarship only if their total family income per month does not exceed an amount equivalent to $ 2,250. Eligibility for scholarship will be judged on the basis of the student’s performance in a qualifying exam (equivalent to plus 2 stage in India). Also the criteria includes minimum three years of education in the UAE inclusive of 11th and 12th or equivalent (not beyond) along with passing the qualifying examination abroad. The last date for receipt of duly filled-in application forms in the prescribed format by Ed.CIL is 18th June
